The PIPSC Human Rights and Diversity Committee is dismayed by the multiple human rights violations emerging from the Qatar FIFA World Cup. The reports of forcing migrant workers into slavery-like work conditions to build the soccer stadiums are cause for great concern. We’re also preoccupied by the mysterious and sudden death of journalist Khalid Al Misslam. Further, the multiple attacks of Qatar government on LGBTQ2S+ athletes and fans are completely unacceptable – fans and athletes should not have to live in fear because of their identity. As Canada’s public service professionals, we must denounce inhumane working conditions and human rights violations at this international event that Canada is actively supporting and participating in.
