World Mental Health Day

World Mental Health Day aims to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world, mobilize efforts in support of mental health and increase awareness and advocacy against social stigma.

2018 Theme - Young People and Mental Health in A Changing World

The theme this year is “young people and mental health in a changing world” which focuses on building mental resilience among young people, to help them cope with the challenges of today’s world.

Half of all mental illness begins by the age of 14, but most cases go undetected and untreated. The burden of disease among adolescents includes depression, suicide, harmful use of alcohol and illicit drugs and eating disorders.

Fortunately, there is a growing recognition of the importance of helping young people build mental resilience, from the earliest ages, to cope with the challenges of today’s world. Prevention begins with being aware of and understanding the early warning signs and symptoms of mental illness and teaching life skills to help cope with everyday challenges at home and at school.
