Volunteer to promote health and safety at your workplace!

Statistics Canada’s Health & Safety and Operation Committees are being renewed. All bargaining agents, including PIPSC, are to be represented.

We are looking for PIPSC members who are not managers and have not served more than 2 years on a Health & Safety committee already to join the Health & Safety Committee and who report in person to a StatCan workplace. Please submit your interest to Eric Hortop (ehortop@pipsc.caby April 15th, including what office you work at. Offices currently renewing their committees are Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Sherbrooke, Sturgeon Falls, Vancouver, and Winnipeg, but if you work at an office in another location and are interested, we will keep you expression of interest for when an opportunity comes up.

Health and safety operation committees contribute to a safe workplace in many ways, including by reviewing incidents, inspecting the workplace, considering hazard mitigation strategies and guiding management. Their training and work is paid time by the employer.

As a member of the Health & Safety committee, there will be a mandatory, paid 2-day in-person training from the Joint Learning Program to complete by end of year. To be a PIPSC representative on a Health and Safety Operation Committee, you do not need to be a PIPSC steward, but our consultation team of stewards will be happy to provide guidance along with PIPSC staff, and if you want to become a steward, we can guide you through the process.
