Young Professionals Advisory Committee Terms of Reference

Effective Date: December 10, 2024

  1. Purpose

The Young Professionals Advisory Committee shall:

  • bring forward to the Board issues in the workplace facing young professionals (members under 40 years old), how to engage and educate our young professionals in PIPSC, present their views on our union, and report back on any obstacles they face in participating in their union;
  • advocate for representation of young professionals at all constituent bodies, committees and consultation teams;
  • find efficiencies through collaboration among the regions by, but not limited to, sharing of information and coordination of similar engagements;
  • champion the participation of young professional members in the activities of the Institute such as steward recruitment, member engagement, and mentorship opportunities;
  • establish and maintain committee artifacts to encode institutional knowledge on its operations and to serve as templates for each region.
  1. Accountability

The Young Professionals Advisory Committee is accountable to the PIPSC Board of Directors

i.             Every 3 years the board reviews the mandate and the committee's deliverables.

ii.            The Board considers the committee's recommendations and sets the strategic direction based on their recommendations.

ii.           The Young Professionals Advisory Committee will meet as allowed per policy.

iv.            Every 6 months a report will be given to the board and every year a report will be given to the National AGM. The Young Professionals Advisory Committee will be transparent, post the minutes, and count the obstacles and progress.

  1.  Authority

There is no authority vested in the Young Professionals Advisory Committee to change policy, expend funds, or take executive action unless such authority is delegated by the Board.

  1. Staff Support

The Young Professionals Advisory Committee is provided staff support by the Executive Secretary’s Office or a volunteer from the group. Any questions the chair has regarding matters associated with committee staff resources must contact the Office of the Executive Secretary and/or the Board Liaison.

  1. Committee Membership

The Young Professionals Advisory Committee is comprised of 7 people:

i. Chair of the regional Young Professionals Committee of each Region and;

ii. PIPSC Board Liaison to the Young Workers Advisory Committee of the Canadian Labour Congress.

iii. Should the regional chair not be able to attend they select an alternate from their regional committee to attend.

iv. The Chair may allow Observers to attend the Committee meetings at no extra cost to the Institute.
